A Day in the Life of a Technical Manager at Green Zone Surveys

No two days are ever the same for our Technical Manager.

As Technical Manager at Green Zone Surveys, Ben plays a pivotal role in leading the technical team, overseeing project quality and ensuring compliance with industry standards, among other responsibilities. We sat down with Ben to gain insight into his day-to-day work, the challenges he faces and what drives his passion for the role.

Hi Ben. To begin, how did you get started in this industry?

"A graduate scheme was advertised on my university’s job page and the description fit with the sustainability and surveying modules I had completed there, so I knew the role was perfect for me."

What does an average day at Green Zone Surveys look like for you?

"If I’m not on-site completing surveys, I’m answering a variety of emails, often including technical queries, quote requests and report updates. I’m also completing quality assurance on reports done by my team as well as completing my own reports."

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

"Meeting constant deadlines is a big one - many of which I set myself so that I don’t get behind or leave clients and colleagues waiting for answers, help or reports."

As a Technical Manager, how often are you out in the field versus in the office?

"Not as much as I used to, or as much as I would like. Only around 20% of my working time is spent in the field now."

How do you handle unexpected issues during surveys or assessments?

"I find it’s best to handle them with patience and I look for ways to solve the problem while on site."

What skills have been most valuable in your career so far?

"How to do measurement surveys, which I learnt at university, has been an extremely useful skill. Not all clients are forthcoming or have floor plans, which means I have to complete one during a survey."

What keeps you motivated in your role?

"The sheer variety of buildings that I get to work in year to year. From cultural to government buildings, entertainment to technology, I have been in so many interesting and historical buildings that the public will likely never get to experience."

Finally, what advice would you give to our clients?

"Invest in your HVAC systems and maintain them regularly! On a weekly basis I see money being wasted by older, inefficient, damaged, dirty or incorrectly sized equipment in buildings. Most equipment upgrade and retrofits will pay for themselves within five years and regular maintenance will always save you money in the long run."

A day in the life of a Technical Manager at Green Zone Surveys is a busy one, balancing client needs, team coordination and technical oversight. Each day presents a new and exciting challenge but is equally rewarding.
