Newcastle Greyhound Stadium are taking water safety seriously, commissioning Green Zone Surveys to carry out Legionella Risk Assessments and monthly water temperature monitoring to ensure full legal compliance.
What is a Legionella Risk Assessment?
A Legionella Risk Assessment (LRA) is a formal process for identifying and evaluating the risk of Legionella bacteria growth in a water system, and putting control measures in place to reduce that risk. In the UK, as specified in the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), the landlord or occupier is obliged to ensure that the water supply does not pose a risk to anyone on the premises. LRA is one way this can be managed.
In practice, this involves Green Zone Surveys surveying the water system - inspecting all hot and cold-water outlets, tanks, pipes, cooling towers etc to ensure there are no stagnant areas or ‘dead legs’ where Legionella bacteria could spread. It also includes producing a written report that documents any risks, outlines control measures and recommends any necessary remedial actions.
Key Findings at Greyhound Stadium
Newcastle Greyhound Stadium has been identified as Medium risk, mainly because some areas are not easily accessible for inspection. The stadium has the potential to achieve low risk status once the suggested management controls and remedial actions are implemented. To minimise Legionella risk, Green Zone Surveys has been carrying out monthly water temperature monitoring at the site for the past few years.
