What is TR19 Certification?

The cleaning of your extraction system not only improves the overall hygiene of your kitchen but also decreases the fire risk. It is the confirmation that the cleaning of your extraction system meets the B.E.S.A. standards. The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) TR19 guide was introduced in 2005 and updated in 2014 to provide guidelines regarding ventilation for buildings in reference to standards of cleanliness relating to ductwork, air duct systems and kitchen extract ductwork. In 2019, the certification was further divided with one referring to HVAC systems and the other specifically to commercial kitchens. A “TR19 Grease” Certificate is a document that certifies your extraction system has been cleaned to exactly these standards.

Insurance:

Every insurance company will request a copy of your TR19 certificate. This is because once a system is TR19 compliant it means your extraction system has over 80% less chance of catching fire. Our Services cover a comprehensive cleaning of all ducting and ductwork, extraction fans, canopies and filters.

Why do insurance companies require extraction systems to have a TR19 Certification?

Extraction systems in kitchens can be dangerous because of the potential accumulation of grease and dust. This can create a hidden combustion load that can be ignited by flames or high temperatures and then spread quickly. This poses a danger not only to the ductwork but also to any surrounding materials. A fire can then spread in ways that are difficult to predict and control. Your insurance wants to confirm that you are mitigating the risk of fire by cleaning your extraction system and ducting regularly, to prevent risk to people and property. This is why they require you to have a TR19 Certificate.

TR19 Certificate helps reduce the risk of fire and cost of insurance.

As the photos above show the accumulation of grease and dust in kitchen extraction systems create a high-risk fire hazard. Regular cleaning is important not only on visible parts but also along the ductwork as a fire can spread quickly through the ductwork to every part of the building.

The Health and Safety Executive states that canopies and ductwork need to be constructed from non-combustible material and made so they discourage accumulations of dirt or grease, and condensation. There should be suitable access to the ductwork to allow regular cleaning to prevent accumulation of fat etc. For further information visit: www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/cais10.htm. Our services ensure you meet the TR19 Certification requirements for insurance purposes and provide peace of mind regarding Health and Safety issues.

How often should Ductwork be cleaned?

The information below forms the basis of the inspection plan and provides a method of ‘measuring and defining’ cleanliness as a benchmark for good practice. It all depends on the number of hours that the system is used daily and the effectiveness of the kitchen extraction system.

Recommended Frequency of Cleaning (as set out in TR19 BESA)

Why is Duct Cleaning to TR19 standards Required?

Insurance companies impose policy conditions on appliance maintenance and system cleaning. In order to meet insurance company requirements and to provide an accurate record of cleaning performance, a report is necessary as a record for the client. At Green Zone we provide a full TR19 Report, containing before & after photographs and schematic drawings.

How often does my kitchen extract system need cleaning?

How often your kitchen extract system needs to be cleaned depends on how many hours per day the kitchen is operational. All kitchen extract systems require professional cleaning at least once a year. Kitchens that are in continuous use, fast food, high grease contaminated extract systems may require more frequent, monthly deep clean to remove the fire risk and improve hygiene.

What Are the Risks of Not Having My Kitchen Extract Cleaned?

The build-up of grease in an extract system forms a hidden combustion load and during the cooking process flammable vapour is given off from cooking oils at temperatures between 200 & 300 degrees centigrade. A fire can occur when spontaneous ignition takes place at 310-360 degrees centigrade. The older the grease, the lower the ignition point hence why regular cleaning is of paramount importance. When grease ignites, fire spreads rapidly through the duct and can ignite surrounding materials along the ductwork path consequently transferring the fire. In effect, systems laden with grease can propagate what started as a small kitchen fire, causing major building destruction.
